  • Condition: Presented in very good overall condition with lovely vivid enamel colors, shows a scratch to the enamel on the right eye (masked area) under magnification and the hair decoration is missing 8 seed pearls. (See Photos).

    Description

    This very rare pendant features a beautifully enameled, inlaid portrait of a masked woman, an emblem of high society in the late 18th and early 19th century, when masquerade balls were fashionable. Immensely popular at the time, masked balls were an opportunity to be liberated, disguise oneself of their normal role and abandon all sense of inhibition. The woman is wearing a lacy black mask with peering, rose cut diamond eyes, a pearl choker and hair decoration containing a seed pearl. It appears that the remainder of the seed pearls are missing.
    The pendant measures 1 1/4 inches high, excluding the bale, by 15/16 of an inch wide and 1/4 of an inch thick. Pendant is unmarked, but tests 14k, with a total weight of 5.8 grams. Metal content was tested with a Niton DXL spectral XRF analyzer. It is in very good condition for it's age with minor damage to the enameling. A great piece!
